In a groundbreaking development, Enugu State is poised to become the first state in Nigeria to have its own electricity regulatory commission, the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC). This marks a significant milestone in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), as EERC will assume regulatory oversight and issue licenses, including a distribution license to Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited, which will take over the operations of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) in the state Âą.
This historic event affirms the states’ constitutional right to develop their electricity sector, covering generation, transmission, distribution, and retailing services, including mini-grid and off-grid electrification solutions. Enugu State, under the leadership of Dr. Peter N. Mbah, has emerged as a pioneer in this process, setting the stage for the development of a sub-national electricity market in Africa.
The handover ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, October 22, 2024, at the EERC Headquarters in Enugu, marking the end of the transition period for the transfer of regulatory oversight from the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to EERC. This development is expected to bring about significant improvements in the electricity supply in Enugu State and serve as a model for other states to follow.
