President Bola Tinubu has given the green light for the relocation of 29 correctional centers in Nigeria, citing the need to modernize the country’s custodial facilities.
Among the centers slated for relocation are:
– *Kaduna Correctional Centre*: Established in 1915, this center is one of the oldest in the country and is in dire need of upgrade.
– *Port Harcourt Correctional Centre*: Built in 1958, this center has become overcrowded and lacks basic amenities.
– *Enugu Correctional Centre*: Located in GRA Enugu, this center is struggling to cope with the growing number of inmates.
– *Suleja Correctional Centre*: Established in 1914, this center has been plagued by security breaches, including a recent jailbreak.
– *Ikoyi Correctional Centre*: Set up in 1956, this center is one of the most congested in the country, with inmates living in squalid conditions.
The relocation is aimed at addressing the challenges posed by outdated infrastructure, overcrowding, and insecurity. The government plans to build modern facilities that meet international standards, providing better living conditions for inmates and improving the overall efficiency of the correctional system.
