Enugu, Nigeria – In commemoration of the 2025 International Women’s Day, the NKATA UMU IBE at Center for Memories’ Monthly Distinguished Speakers Series hosted Professor Joy Ezeilo, who delivered a powerful speech celebrating the essence of Igbo womanhood.
Professor Ezeilo highlighted the significance of the Igbo phrase “Nwanyi bu ife,” which translates to “woman is life” or “woman is the essence of life.” She emphasized the importance of substantial inclusion of women in all spheres of life, citing the Igbo woman as a perfect example of tenacity and resilience.
The professor’s speech was a testament to the vital role women play in society and the need to recognize and value their contributions, agency, and dignity. She stressed that accelerating equality for all women and girls requires:

Professor Ezeilo highlighted several patriarchal norms that perpetuate exploitation and abuse against women, including:
1. *Inheritance and Property Rights*: Excluding women from inheriting property, including land and houses.
2. *Decision-Making and Leadership*: Limiting women’s participation in leadership positions and decision-making processes.
3. *Marriage and Bride Price*: Commodifying women through the payment of bride price.
4. *Restrictions on Education and Career*: Limiting women’s access to education and career opportunities.
5. *Widowhood Practices*: Subjecting widows to discriminatory practices, such as purification rituals and denial of inheritance rights.
6. *Limited Participation in Traditional Governance*: Excluding women from participating in traditional governance structures.
7. *Expectations of Domesticity*: Prioritizing domestic duties over personal ambitions or career goals.
8. *Restrictions on Freedom of Movement*: Limiting women’s freedom of movement and participation in public events.
9. *Marriage Migration Exploitation*: Exploiting women in marriage for financial gain.
10. *Forced Marriage Trafficking*: Coercing and exploiting women in marriage.
11. *Transnational Marriage Abuse*: Abusing and exploiting women in transnational marriages.
Some of these patriarchal norms are not unique to Igbo culture and are being challenged and reevaluated by many Igbo people, particularly women, who are advocating for greater equality and inclusivity.
The event was part of the 2025 International Women’s Day celebrations, which aimed to promote gender equality and empower women and girls worldwide, which was held at Enugu, Nigeria.
