The legal profession in Nigeria is facing a crisis of dignity and prestige, with lawyers being subjected to demeaning treatment by clients and the general public. In a thought-provoking article, Chinedu Agu, a legal practitioner, sheds light on the root causes of this trend and proposes solutions to salvage the profession.

Agu recounts his personal experience of losing two briefs due to clients’ insistence on underpricing legal services, highlighting the pervasive perception that legal services are not essential but rather a favor done to the lawyer. He attributes this trend to the legal profession’s loss of esoterism and the failure of lawyers to maintain a sense of professionalism.

The author argues that lawyers themselves have contributed to the degradation of the profession through unbecoming conducts such as:

– Charging nominal fees for services, thereby devaluing the profession
– Delegating legal work to non-lawyers, compromising the quality of services
– Failing to maintain a clean and professional appearance, eroding public trust

Brightpaul Enekwe (Esq,), still contributing, echoes Agu’s sentiments emphasizing that 90% of Nigerian lawyers have contributed to the profession’s downfall. He advocates for individual sensitization and self-conscientization to break the cycle of revenge and retaliation that plagues the profession.

To reclaim the profession’s prestige and pride, the following measures are proposed:

1. *Adherence to professional rules and regulations*: Lawyers must uphold ethical standards and adhere to professional codes of conduct.
2. *Standardization of fees*: Lawyers should establish standardized fees for services, eliminating the culture of underpricing.
3. *Professional development*: Lawyers must invest in continuous learning and professional development to enhance their skills and expertise.
4. *Rebranding the profession*: Lawyers must work together to rebrand the profession, promoting a positive image and highlighting the value of legal services.
5. *Strengthening professional associations*: Professional associations, such as the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), must be strengthened to promote and protect the interests of lawyers.
6. *Public awareness campaigns*: Public awareness campaigns should be launched to educate the public on the importance and value of legal services.
7. *Mentorship programs*: Mentorship programs should be established to guide young lawyers and promote professionalism.

By implementing these measures, lawyers can restore the dignity and prestige of their noble profession, promoting a culture of respect and professionalism.
